Superclásico del Fútbol Paraguayo is the name of the derby in the Paraguayan capital Asunción between Club Olimpia and Club Cerro Porteño , the two most successful teams in the country. Despite a relatively balanced record of the two clubs in the domestic championship (Olimpia is the record champion with 40 titles, Cerro Porteño follows in second place with 32 successes), there is no other city with such an imbalance in terms of sport among the great rivals of South American football Successes like between these two clubs. Because at the international level, Cerro Porteño has never won a title, while Olimpia has already won several international titles. These include three successes in the most important South American club competition, the Copa Libertadores , as well as winning the World Cup after its first triumph in 1979 .

Derby statistics

On August 19, 2018, the 300th league game derby of the Paraguayan soccer championship between the Olimpistas and the Cerristas took place . The Club Cerro Porteño emerged 106 times as the winner from these 300 confrontations so far, while the otherwise more successful Club Olimpia "only" won 104 matches. The remaining 90 games ended in a draw.

Club Olimpia, founded in 1902, is considered the "dean" of Paraguayan football , while its arch-rival was not founded until 10 years later. The first duel between the two clubs did not take place until September 21, 1913 and was won 3-1 by the still young "Azulgranas" (the "Blue-Reds").

In 1915, the two rivals finished the season tied at the top of the table, so that a decider was necessary to determine the master. This ended 1: 1, so that both teams had to compete against each other again. Again, no decision was made after the regular playing time, but it was all the more violent in the subsequent extra time with 7: 4. In this, the Cerristas literally overran their ten years older rival and since then the Club Cerro Porteño has been nicknamed "El Ciclón" ("The Cyclone").

Sociological aspects and fans

While the Club Olimpia was founded by young people who belonged to the local upper class and had bourgeois-elitist roots, the Club Cerro Porteño, located in the popular Barrio Obrero, was known from the beginning as the “Club del Pueblo”, a “people's association”. While the football author Omar Gisler stated in his book Football Derbies - The 75 Most Football Crazy Cities in the World , published in 2007 , that the Cerristas have the larger following, a report published in 2018 assumes that there are more fans of Club Olimpia overall give, whereby this is due in particular to the younger football fans. In contrast, the Club Cerro Porteño actually has more fans among the over 35-year-olds.

There have already been several violent clashes between the two fan groups, which also resulted in isolated deaths.
