Supermarine PB31E Nighthawk

Supermarine Aviation Works, Limited was a British aircraft manufacturer best known for its seaplanes and the Supermarine Spitfire interceptor .

history

In 1913 Noel Pemberton-Billing founded Pemberton-Billing, Ltd for the manufacture of seaplanes. The company also built a number of prototypes of four-decker aircraft for fighting zeppelins , the Pemberton-Billing PB29 and the Supermarine Nighthawk , which were equipped with recoilless Davis cannons , the Nighthawk had its own engine to power a searchlight .

When Pemberton-Billing became a Member of Parliament in 1916 , he sold the company to his plant manager and long-time partner, Hubert Scott-Paine . This, the company renamed in Supermarine Aviation Works, Ltd . Supermarine became known for the successes that their seaplanes achieved at the Schneider Trophy , in particular the three victories in a row in 1927, 1929 and 1931.

1928 took Vickers Armstrong Supermarine as Supermarine Aviation Works (Vickers) Ltd . In 1938 all Vickers-Armstrongs aviation activities were reorganized to Vickers-Armstrongs (Aircraft) Ltd , with Supermarine continuing to develop and sell under its own name.

The company's first land plane was the legendary Spitfire , which together with the Hawker Hurricane formed the backbone of British air defense against the German bombers in the Battle of Britain . The Hurricane had emerged earlier and therefore there were more specimens, but the new Spitfire got the attention and became associated with the battle.

Other famous British WWII aircraft were the Seafire , a naval version of the Spitfire. Furthermore, Supermarine developed the Spiteful and Seafang as successors to the Spitfire and Seafire and the Walrus flying boat .

Supermarine's main factories were in the Woolston suburb of Southampton , which resulted in the town being heavily bombed in 1940.

The last of the Supermarine aircraft was the Supermarine Scimitar . Then, in the wake of the upheaval in the British aviation industry, Vickers-Armstrongs (aircraft) became part of the British Aircraft Corporation .
