Susan Bassnett

Susan Bassnett (also Susan Bassnett-McGuire, * 1945 ) is a British translation scholar and university professor. She is Vice-Rector at the University of Warwick and founded the Center for Translation and Comparative Cultural Studies in 1980 , at which she also taught until it closed in 2009. Over the course of her career, she has published more than 20 books, some of which are an important pillar of translation studies.

Life

Susan Bassnett came into contact with many languages ​​during her childhood. Since she was born in England , she first learned the English language . However, her family later moved to Denmark , which made Danish their second language. She then moved to Portugal , where she learned Portuguese . Then she went to Italy to study and learned Italian there . There she began her career after completing her first degree. She taught at various universities around the world, including universities in the United States, before joining the University of Warwick, where she is Professor of Comparative Literature to this day. In 2007 she was elected a member of the Royal Society of Literature . Since 2006 she has been a member of the Academia Europaea .

According to her own statement, her first publication was a translation, but she never intended to work as a translator.
