Susan Berresford

Susan Vail Berresford (born January 8, 1943 ) was from 1996 to 2007 the President of the Ford Foundation (Ford Foundation). Since 2008 she has been working there as a philanthropy advisor in the New York Community Trust department.

Life

Susan Berresford attended Vassar College from 1961 to 1963 and then studied American history at Radcliffe College , where she graduated cum laude in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). She is currently leading several projects for the Ford Foundation and in October 2008 she joined the American Fund for the UNICEF National Committee. Berresford was elected President of the Ford Foundation on April 3, 1996. Before the election she was the managing director and vice president of the foundation. In 1970 she joined the Ford Foundation as a project assistant in the Department of National Affairs. She worked in this department between 1972 and 1980 as a program officer. In 1980 she was appointed head of the women's program. She became Vice President of the Foundation in the United States for International Affairs in 1981 and later also Vice President of the Department for Worldwide Program Distribution.

From 1965 to 1967, Berresford was employed by the foundation as a program officer for the Neighborhood Youth Corps . From 1967 to 1968 she worked for the Manpower Career Development Agency . Berresford is a board member of the Foundation's Council and a member of the Trilateral Commission. She is also a council member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has served on the committees of Chase Manhattan Bank , the Hermione and Robert Popper Foundation.

She is also a board member and chairman of the United States Artists, while serving as a council member of the Trinidad Trust Fund, California. Ms. Berresford has served on the National Affairs Council and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 1998 . As administrator of the California Endowment Foundation and the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation. She founded the "US-Vietnam Dialogue Group on Agent Orange / Dioxin".
