Susan Quinn

Susan Quinn (* 1953 in Milton , Massachusetts , United States ) is the founder and artistic director of the SEAD Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance .

Susan Quinn received her education at Purchase College in Purchase (New York) and at the Tisch School of the Arts in New York , which she graduated in 1981. In the same year she was appointed to the company of Merce Cunningham and was there solo dancer for seven years. Quinn then began to work with various choreographers in and outside of New York, deepening her studies in choreography, dance technique and composition. She came to Salzburg in the early 1990s.

In 1993, Susan Quinn opened a first dance studio on Waagplatz and thus founded SEAD Salzburg Experimental Academy of Dance. From 1991 to 2006 she was also a choreographer for her own Susan Quinn Dance Company (SQDC). She is a founding member of the Salzburg dance platform tanz_house, taught contemporary dance and composition at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg from 1991 to 2013 and was a member of the Salzburg Cultural Advisory Board (2001–2004).

In 2008 Susan Quinn founded the internationally touring company BODHI PROJECT and, as artistic director, invites international guest choreographers to collaborate in Salzburg. She regularly initiates and curates dance festivals and performance series for contemporary dance and is committed to promoting young artists.

Awards

  • 2012: Merce Cunningham Fellowship of the Merce Cunningham Trust
  • 2016: International main prize for art and culture by the city of Salzburg.
