Sven Externbrink

Sven Externbrink (* 1965 ) is a German historian with a focus on the early modern period .

From 1986 to 1992 Externbrink studied history, art history , philosophy and French literature at the Philipps University of Marburg and the Université Savoie-Mont-Blanc . Since 1996 he has taught at the Philipps University in Marburg. In 1997 he received his doctorate under Klaus Malettke ; the dissertation was entitled "Le Coeur du monde - France and the northern Italian states (Mantua, Parma, Savoy) in the age of Richelieu 1624-1635". In 2003 he completed his habilitation at the Philipps University of Marburg with the habilitation thesis "Friedrich the Great, Maria Theresa and the Old Reich - Image of Germany and France's Diplomacy in the Seven Years' War (1755–1763)". From 2005 to 2006 Sven Externbrink was a scholarship holder of the Gerda Henkel Foundation , from 2007 to 2008 he taught at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg . From 2008 to 2009 he was visiting lecturer at the German Historical Institute in Rome ; From 2009 to 2010 he represented the professorship for modern history at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . From October 2010 to February 2012 Externbrink was the scientific coordinator at the Cluster of Excellence “Asia and Europe in a Global Context” at Heidelberg University. Since March 2012 he has been academic advisor and lecturer at the history department there, and in 2016 he was appointed adjunct professor. Since April 2019, Externbrink has represented the Chair of Early Modern History ( Thomas Maissen , currently Director of the German Historical Institute in Paris) at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg

His research interests in the field of early modern times are primarily international relations, political communication, and the history of France and Italy. In addition, he deals with Franco-German history in the European context and the history of historiography.
