The first aerial photographs were taken during the German Antarctic Expedition (1938–1939). Norwegian cartographers mapped them on the basis of measurements and aerial photographs of the Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic Expedition (1949–1952) and aerial photographs of the Third Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–1960). It is named after the Norwegian oceanographer Harald Ulrik Sverdrup (1888–1957), chairman of the Norwegian committee of the Norwegian-British-Swedish Antarctic Expedition.
