Sverre Bruland

Sverre Tonning Olsen Bruland (born February 2, 1923 in Stavanger , Norway ; † September 24, 2013 ) was a Norwegian trumpeter and conductor.

Bruland was a student of Per Steenberg , Karl Andersen , Odd Grüner-Hegge , Igor Markevitch , Paul van Kempen , he studied at the Juilliard School in New York (1949/50) and at the Mozarteum in Salzburg.

In 1945/46 he began his career as a trumpeter in the Music Corps of the 2nd Division in Oslo and at the Oslo Philharmonic, where he worked for the next twenty years. He made his debut as an orchestra conductor there in 1954. In 1966, Bruland became conductor of the NRK . From 1976 to 1988 he was chief conductor of the radio orchestra. He shifted the repertoire more to classical music.

Bruland won first prize in the international conducting championship in Liverpool in 1958; also in 1959 the Tanglewood Conducting Prize, USA. He has conducted the Berliner Philharmoniker twice with programs of Norwegian music.
