The Svip Rocks ( Norwegian Svip Klippene ) are a group of submarine cliff rocks in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . They are 18 km west-northwest of Rugged Island .
The Norwegian whaling entrepreneur August Fredrik Christensen (1888-1959) mapped and named it between 1908 and 1909 from the ship Vesterlide . It is named after the Norwegian whaling ship Svip , which was part of Christensen's fleet and operated in the waters around the South Shetland Islands at the time. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names translated the name into English in 1952.
