Swaminathan Aiyar

Swaminathan "Swami" S. Anklesaria Aiyar is an Indian journalist . He is the Times of India Publishing Editor and a Fellow at the Cato Institute .

Aiyar studied at St. Stephen's College , Delhi , and at Magdalen College of Oxford University , where he obtained a Master in Economics was awarded. He was editor of the Financial Express from 1988 to 1990 and editor of the Economic Times from 1992 to 1994 . He was also the India correspondent for the Economist for two decades . He has also advised the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). He is known for his weekly column in the Times of India and also appears as a television commentator.

His topics include economic change in developing countries , human rights , new political economy , energy , trade and industry .

Aiyar also invests in social projects. He is the head of the Mukundan Charitable Trust . He has supported three microfinance organizations in Calcutta , Allahabad and Dehradun . Aiyar is on the board of directors of a microfinance organization promoting artisans and is building a fleet of ships to provide medical care on islands in Brahmaputra .

Aiyar is married to journalist Shahnaz Anklesaria Aiyar and has three children, including journalist Pallavi Aiyar.

He describes himself as a " liberal atheist ".
