The City of Swan is one of 30 Local Government Areas in the Perth metropolitan area in Western Australia .

Location and geography

The City of Swan is located on the northeastern periphery of Perth and, with an area of ​​1042 km², is the largest Local Government Area in the metropolitan area of ​​this metropolis. It comprises 80,000 inhabitants spread over 37 districts (as of 2006), which constitute de facto districts and satellite towns of Perth in the south of the district, while the northern districts include smaller housing estates and wineries in the middle of the vineyards of the Swan Valley on both sides of the Swan River . In the north, the municipality borders on the Walyunga National Park, which is characterized by eucalyptus forests, acacia and Banksia bushes with granite formations .

The self-image of the City of Swan is that of an up-and-coming economic region that expects its population to double by 2020.

  • Guildford is the oldest settlement of the Swan River Colony founded by James Stirling in 1829 . Until 1970 it was the administrative seat of the Local Government Area. A number of historic buildings from the colonial era have been restored.
  • The current administrative seat of the City of Swan (until 2000 Shire of Swan) has been in Midland since 1970, when the previously independent township was incorporated into the Local Government Area. The satellite town of Midland, which has grown together with Perth, constitutes the industrial heart of the City of Swan.
  • The Swan Valley , which covers 300 hectares of the district, is the oldest wine-growing region in Western Australia. The nucleus is in Middle Swan and Caversham with the largest wineries in the state, Houghton and Sandalford . About 80 small and medium-sized wineries are spread over different parts of the village. Districts dominated by viticulture are also West Swan, Herne Hill, Henley Brook, Millendon, Baskerville and Belhus. James Stirling's expedition reached the height of Henley Brook in 1827. The oldest church in the greater Perth area ( All Saints Church ) is located in this district .
  • In Brigadoon and Upper Swan, the wine-growing region merges into the typical landscape of Walyunga National Park. The community has created picnic areas and hiking trails, which are particularly popular during the wildflower season in September / October.
  • In addition to viticulture, Whiteman is known for its animal park and pottery.
  • Some districts are dominated by sport (golf in The Vines, skating and tennis in Beechboro, Ballajura, Bullsbrook).
