Swantibor (12th century)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Swantibor , also Swantibor I. (* unknown; † unknown) was a prince of Pomerania in the 12th century. He is the progenitor of a branch named after him of the Greifenhaus ruling in Pomerania , the Swantiboriden .

Lore

Swantibor is only known from two documents from 1187 and 1196, in which he is mentioned as the father of Wartislaw Swantiboricz († 1196). The latter is referred to in documents as a relative of the Greifenhaus ruling in Pomerania . The descendants of Swantibor form the branch line of the Swantiboriden .

It is not known how closely Swantibor was related to the Pomeranian prince Suatobor , who is said to have died in 1107. It is rather unlikely that the two people are identical, since Wartislaw Swantiboricz would then have to have been over 89 years old.

According to the judgment of the historian Martin Wehrmann (1861–1937), the exact relationship between this Swantibor and the Greifenhaus cannot be determined with certainty; possibly he was a cousin of the first known dukes from the Greifenhaus, Wartislaw I. and Ratibor I.

numbering

Because of the sources, which are very sparse regarding this Swantibor, it cannot be called the first Duke of Pomerania of his name. Since the prince referred to in older literature as Swantibor II came from a branch of the Greifenhaus, Swantibor (~ 1351-1413), who ruled much later, became Swantibor I. This is how Martin Wehrmann proceeded in his genealogy of the Pomeranian ducal house (1937) .
