Swissfoundations

SwissFoundations is the association of Swiss development foundations. Members of the association can become non-profit foundations based in Switzerland and Liechtenstein that provide support in a wide variety of areas.

The association, which claims to be politically and ideologically independent, was founded in 2001 and currently has around 170 members. It emerged as a split of dissatisfied members of the then working group for charitable foundations . Between 2010 and 2015, the members invested more than one and a half billion francs in charitable projects and initiatives; in 2014 they distributed over 373 million francs, which is over 20 percent of the estimated funding volume of all charitable foundations in Switzerland. Of this, around 121 million went to education / research / innovation, 74 million to social affairs, 63 million to culture, 99 million to international development cooperation and around 16 million to environment / other.

Goals, activities

The association advocates effective foundation governance and transparency and imparts specialist knowledge, promotes exchange between foundation experts, represents interests primarily at the federal level and publishes the Foundation Governance series . In order to promote academic engagement with foundations in Switzerland, the association initiated the Center for Philanthropy Studies (CEPS) at the University of Basel . For applicants, the association has worked with other institutions to develop the perfect application guide .

The association is led by an 8-member board under the leadership of Lukas von Orelli, President, and Peter Brey, Vice-President. The managing director is Beate Eckhardt. The headquarters of the House of Foundations is in Zurich , the association is also represented in French-speaking Switzerland with a “Maison des Fondations” in Geneva .
