Sygkrasi , Synkrasi ( Greek Σύγκραση ) or Turkish Sınıüstü is a village on the southwestern edge of the Karpas peninsula in the north of the Mediterranean island of Cyprus . It is located in the Gazimağusa District of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus . The place had 186 inhabitants in 2011.

history

Sygkrasi was one of the settlements on the Karpas peninsula that was inhabited by both Cypriot Turks and Greeks. Under Ottoman rule in 1831 there were 51 Christian and 45 Muslim heads of households, which were later assigned to the Greek and Cyprus Cypriots, although the Ottomans were by no means based on ethnic group, but rather on religious affiliation. When the British, as the new colonial rulers from 1878, carried out a first census in 1891, they found 142 "Turks" and 71 "Greeks" out of 213 inhabitants. Ten years later, 30 more people lived in the village, with the Greek minority alone having grown by 20 people. In 1911, 121 of the now 264 inhabitants were Greeks, whose share exceeded that of the Turks for the first time in 1921. Of the 307 inhabitants, 168 were Greeks and only 139 were Turks. The number of Greeks slowly decreased in the censuses of 1931 and 1946, namely from 137 to 123, while the number of Greeks rose to 206 and 222, with a total of 343 and 345 inhabitants, respectively. In 1960 the place had only 277 inhabitants, in 1973 there were only 187. The number of Cypriot Turks fell even faster (102 and 33 respectively), but also the Greek Cypriots were fewer (175 and 154 respectively).

This was due to the fact that most of the Turks fled because of the Greek-Turkish conflict in February 1964 , especially to Altınova / Agios Iakovos and to Famagusta . Only some of them returned, so that in 1971 35 Turks lived in the village again.

In August 1974 all around 200 Greeks had to leave the place. Only a small part of the Turks who fled in 1964 returned; despite pressure from the government, they refused and preferred to stay where they had fled. In 1976, a small number of Turks, most of whom came from the Çarşamba district in the province of Samsun , settled in the village. In 2006 there were 154 residents again.
