Sylter Steamship Company

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sylter Dampfschiffahrtsgesellschaft ( DSG for short ) was a shipping company that was founded in 1882 as a stock corporation with a capital of 75,000 marks . The 150 shares at 500 marks each were subscribed by citizens of Sylt . In 1896 the capital was increased to 225,000 marks. The DSG maintained a regular ferry connection between Sylt, where the company was based, and Hoyer on the mainland.

The director was initially Captain Peter Jürgen Hansen Kamp from Kampen, from 1893 Captain Friedrich Erichsen from Westerland.

history

The Freya

The DSG opened its operations with the paddle steamer Germania taken over from the Clauen shipping company and some ice boats. In 1882 the ferry service between Munkmarsch and Hoyerschleuse began . In 1884 the side paddle steamer Sylt and the ship Vorwärts were put into service. 1985 the side wheel steamer Westerland followed (built at the Howaldts shipyard in Kiel ). Three years later the company took over the Munkmarsch - Westerland Ostbahn, which was completed in 1888 . In 1900 the fleet was supplemented by the steamer Nordsee (cost: 92,000 marks), followed a year later by the paddle steamer Frisia (construction costs 116,000 marks), and in 1904 the side paddle steamer Freya (construction costs 120,000 marks). In 1910, the bank association for Schleswig-Holstein and the Schröder Gebrüder & Co. taken over, the 1907 completed Sylter Nordbahn (Westerland - List) was bought. In 1919 the Sylter DSG bought the screw steamer Auguste Victoria and the motorboat Prussia . In 1924 the company leased the Sylter Südbahn (Westerland - Hörnum) built in 1902 by the Hamburg-America Line.

Since a connection with the mainland was not always possible in winter because of the icing, ice boats were used instead of ships , e.g. B. in winter 1903/1904. With the completion of the Hindenburg dam in 1927, the company ceased operations and was dissolved on July 1 of the same year.
