Sylvanus Hanley

Sylvanus Charles Thorp Hanley (born January 7, 1819 in Holywell Street in Oxford , † April 5, 1899 in Penzance ) was a British malacologist .

Life and Wiken

Hanley had inherited richly and was dedicated to collecting molluscs, especially mussels. The majority of his collection came to the Leeds City Museum, some is in the Natural History Museum .

Many publications come from him, whereby he also used photos. He used the pen name Charles Thorpe.

He was the first to describe at least 219 species, including the first description of the brown mangrove mussel (Glauconome rugosa).

Memberships

In 1843 Hanley was introduced by Lovell Augustus Reeve as member number 282 of the Société cuviérienne .
