Sylvester Leer

Sylvester Leer (born December 28, 1880 in Edelbach, Waldviertel , † December 30, 1957 in Klagenfurt ) was an Austrian politician of the Christian Social Party . From February 16 to March 7, 1934, Leer was the managing governor of Carinthia .

Sylvester Leer completed an apprenticeship as a locksmith after finishing school. His military service took him to Klagenfurt. From 1903 to 1913 he was branch manager of the Carinthia printing and bookshop in Wolfsberg . Sylvester Leer's political career began in 1918. He becomes a member of the provisional state government and in the Carinthian defensive battle also a member of the defense committee . For his services, Leer received the General Carinthian Cross for Services. In 1919 he entered the provisional provincial assembly of Carinthia as a member of parliament . He becomes regional councilor and deputy governor. In 1934 he was acting governor for a few days. When German troops marched in in 1938, Leer was arrested by the Gestapo and deported to Buchenwald concentration camp in 1939 . After his release, he worked as an accountant. In 1945 he was involved in founding the ÖVP and was again a member of the state council.

Leer was an honorary member of two Catholic student associations. In 1925 he becomes a member of the Catholic German student association Grail in the MKV . This was reactivated after the prohibition period in 1945 as a community of four former connections (with Gothia, Nibelungia and Spanheim) as the Catholic Austrian Student Union Babenberg. This belonged to Leer until his death. He was also an honorary member of the (Ö) CV association K.Ö.St.V. Rudolfina Vienna .

Sylvester Leer is buried at the Annabichl cemetery in Klagenfurt . His grave is named III / XIV / 2/7 and is in the immediate vicinity of the ceremonial hall.
