The Symbols Act is a law that regulates the prohibition of the use of symbols belonging to the Islamic State (IS), Al-Qaeda groups and their sub-organizations or successors in Austria. It came into force on January 1, 2015 . The law was passed as part of an “anti-terror package” in the National Council under the impression of jihadism , which is also increasingly burgeoning in Europe .

Criminal liability

It is forbidden to display, display, carry or distribute symbols of the groups mentioned in public, including with the aid of electronic means of communication. Badges and emblems are also to be regarded as symbols. Anyone who violates this law commits an administrative offense and is to be punished by the security authority of the 1st instance ( district administrative authority or state police directorate ) with a fine of up to 4,000 euros or with a prison sentence of up to one month.
