Symphorian Altbießer , also Pollio (* around 1475 in Strasbourg ; † around 1537 there ) was a theologian and reformer.

Live and act

In his humanistic youth he was employed by Jakob Wimpheling as a priest at St. Stefan , later a priest at St. Martin's Church. In 1522 he was elected preacher at Strasbourg Cathedral and soon took the side of Matthäus Zell, who was ousted by the canons . When he married in 1524, the canons wanted to oust him too. In order to get protection from the canons' stalking, he acquired the citizenship.

As against others, defamation was spread against him. Martin Bucer had opposed this in his work Grund und Ursach (1524), and Altbießer had signed it. Since the gossip against him did not cease, he wrote his own pamphlet on what one should keep against newen meren, as published daily by the preachers of the Gospel. Strasbourg February 1st 1525 .

He had to leave his St. Martin Church in 1529 because it was demolished because of its dilapidation. The already old man then went to the church of the leper hospital “To the good people” in front of the city. In the Strasbourg hymn book he was represented with several songs. In Strasbourg he was counted among the main leaders of the Reformation movement. Most recently he worked at St. Aurelia , as Bucer's successor.
