The synagogue in Druja , a Belarusian town in the Vileika district in Vitebskaya Woblasz , was probably built in the second half of the 18th century. It was destroyed in World War II.

history

The synagogue was most likely built between 1765 and 1766. A lower extension was later added to the building on the north side. The Torah shrine was a little younger and dates from the early 18th century.

After the German invasion of the Soviet Union , a ghetto for the Jewish population was set up in Druja. This was located in the vicinity of the synagogue. When residents were to be picked up to be murdered in the summer of 1942, fires broke out in the ghetto. The synagogue was also badly damaged.

After the war, the remains of the building were finally demolished.

architecture

The compact building was covered with a hipped roof, the later extension had a pent roof that covered part of the windows. With the exception of the smooth west wall, the outer walls were divided into fields by pilasters , each with a tall, narrow window. The women's prayer room was an integral part of the building from the start.

The main room, used as the men's prayer room, was almost square. The vault was divided into nine fields by four columns that were slightly shifted towards the center. The bima was between these pillars.

The Torah shrine traditionally stood on the east wall. It was elaborately carved, consisted of several levels that narrowed towards the top and covered the middle window of the wall.
