The synagogue in Eisenstadt , the capital of the federal state of Burgenland in Austria , was built in 1832/33. The synagogue was in the ghetto .

The synagogue was set on fire during the November pogrom in 1938 and the valuable cult objects were destroyed. The synagogue site was then sold and the ruins were then removed. According to other sources, the synagogue is said to have been badly damaged in the summer of 1938, although it was used as a warehouse during the war. It was only demolished after the war.

Commemoration

A memorial plaque in the newly built union building on the synagogue site reminded of the synagogue with the inscription: “This is where the temple of the Jewish community in Eisenstadt stood until racial madness and national arrogance set it on fire on November 11, 1938. The Austrian Trade Union Federation acquired the property and built this house from 1951 to 1952. The spirit of human unity and fraternal togetherness should work in him. "

In the 1980s the union building was sold and the new owner, an insurance company, replaced the memorial plaque with a new one with the inscription: “This is where the synagogue of the Eisenstadt Jewish community stood, which was devastated on November 11, 1938 on Kristallnacht. "
