Synagogue in Hörden (before 1928)

The synagogue in Hörden was the place of worship for the local Jewish community. Today Hörden is a district of Gaggenau in Baden-Württemberg .

Jewish community of Hörden

The first mention of Jews in Hörden comes from the year 1683. By 1864, the number of Jewish residents in Hörden, who often traded in linen ribbons as "Bändeljuden", rose. At that time there were 80 inhabitants of Jewish faith. Then the number fell sharply again: In 1900 there were still 35 Jewish residents living in Hörden, in 1933 there were only 14. The Jewish community in Hörden existed until 1928; then still in connection with the Gernsbach community until 1939. The children went to the local school and received religious instruction in a room in the synagogue. The dead were buried in the cemetery in Kuppenheim .

The Stern family also owned the Hotel Central in Bad Herrenalb

In 1938, several shops and the “Zum Adler” inn were still owned by Jewish families. The interior of the inn was destroyed during the Night of the Reichspogrom , the landlord Ludwig Stern was killed in the Dachau concentration camp . In total, at least seven of the last 14 Jewish residents in Hörden perished during the Nazi era . Mayor Schwan, who died in 1936, tried to protect the Jewish residents after the National Socialists came to power and was therefore slandered in the Striker . The Jewish resident Julius Maier, owner of a textile store, was appointed honorary commander of the Hörden fire department in 1935, which had to be reversed shortly afterwards. Maier was one of the last four Jews in Hörden. His business was demolished in 1938, he himself was deported to Camp de Gurs and died in Auschwitz .

synagogue

After initially only a prayer room was used, a synagogue council was formed in 1839. A synagogue was built between 1860 and 1862 on what is now Landstrasse 89, which also housed the classroom for the children and the apartment of the teacher and cantor. It was inaugurated on February 4, 1862. On March 15, 1928, after the municipality was dissolved, it became the property of two private individuals who had it converted into a residential building. The proceeds of 6050 marks were used for the construction of the Gernsbach synagogue . Since the Hörden synagogue had already been profaned in 1928, the building was not affected by the riots during the Reichspogromnacht in 1938 and still exists. A plaque was not attached to it.
