Synagogue (Gernsbach)
The synagogue in Gernsbach , a town in the Rastatt district in Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1927/28. The synagogue at Austraße 3 was destroyed during the November pogroms in 1938 .
history
There was a prayer room for the Gernsbach Jewish community in the old town by the middle of the 19th century at the latest. In 1860 a synagogue was built on Färbertorstrasse. Its successor was built according to plans by the Karlsruhe architect Richard Fuchs (1887–1947) in a new building area. The inauguration took place on July 15, 1928. The Offenburg district rabbi Isidor Zlociski, who gave the sermon, and the conference rabbi Julius Zimels from Freiburg were present.
In the early afternoon of November 10, 1938 , the Gernsbach synagogue was burned down by SA men from Gaggenau .
A house was built on the foundations of the former synagogue and was destroyed by an air raid in 1944. After 1945 a house was built on the property again.
Commemoration
Since November 10, 1985, a bronze plaque commemorates the synagogue.
