The synagogue in Bühl , a town in the Rastatt district in Baden-Württemberg , was built in 1823. The synagogue at Johannesplatz 10 was set on fire on November 10, 1938 and the ruin of the fire was demolished afterwards.

history

In 1821 the Bühl Jewish community began planning a new synagogue. Since the municipality was asked at the same time by the district office to build a new ritual bath ( mikveh ), the start of construction was postponed. The synagogue was built in 1823 according to the plans of the architect J. Wagner from Baden-Baden . A representative building was erected, the classical facade of which stood out from the surrounding residential buildings.

time of the nationalsocialism

As early as 1930, the outer walls of the synagogue were repeatedly smeared with swastikas . In 1935 four men from Bühl climbed over the wall of the synagogue courtyard at night and penetrated the synagogue through a window. They tore down the curtain in front of the Torah shrine and took the scrolls from the Torah cloaks, as well as damaging the harmonium on the gallery . They carried the Torah scrolls and prayer books to the neighboring property and tried to set fire to everything they couldn't. The main offender caught was sentenced to eleven months in prison.

During the November pogrom of 1938, the synagogue was set on fire on the morning of November 10th. The fire brigade had been instructed to only protect the neighboring buildings. A few days after the synagogue was destroyed, the city administration had the fire ruins and the building of the Jewish school removed. The Jewish community had to pay the cost of 1,400 marks, which they could only do by selling the synagogue property.

Commemoration

The synagogue site was rebuilt in 1983. On November 10, 1983, then Lord Mayor Ulrich Wendt and representatives of the Upper Council of Israelites in Baden unveiled a memorial stone in memory of the synagogue.
