The synagogue in Lich , a town in the central Hessian district of Gießen , was established in 1921 in a residential building with an inn at Amtsgerichtsstrasse 4, which had existed since 1879/80. The great hall was converted into a synagogue .

During the November pogrom in 1938 the synagogue was desecrated by SA men and the furnishings were destroyed. In 1940 the Lich municipality came into possession of the building, after which it was used in various ways, including serving the Lich Nazis for their NSKK meetings. In 1948, walls and false ceilings were installed in the former synagogue hall to create rooms for the city administration. In 1967 a day care center for the elderly was set up in the rooms .

With the help of the Ernst Ludwig Chambré Foundation and the city of Lich - which is still the owner - the building was restored and handed over to the public as the Bezalel Synagogue cultural center on January 29, 2006 . It serves as a place of remembrance, meeting and with its 130-person room as an event location. In the former synagogue, which has been declared a Hessian cultural monument , the Ernst Ludwig Chambré Foundation with a library and media library is also home to the Lich Music School.
