Synagogue (Naroulja)

Synagogue (1916)

The synagogue in Naroulja , a Belarusian town in Homelskaja Woblasz , had one of the most imposing roof structures of all wooden synagogues in the aristocratic republic of Poland-Lithuania (1569–1795).

history

The synagogue dates back to the 18th century, with various sources indicating both the beginning and the last quarter of this century.

At the beginning of the 20th century, renovation work was carried out again in the entrance area and the roof was covered with sheet metal.

Since there are neither photos, current drawings nor descriptions for the period after the First World War , it can be assumed that the building was destroyed during this period or shortly afterwards. However, in some sources the Second World War is also given as the date of the destruction.

architecture

The large, rectangular main hall measured 10.80 × 8.60 m and was surrounded on three sides by lower rooms: to the west by the vestibule and to the south and north by the prayer rooms for women. The entrance to the vestibule and from there to the main hall on the west side was through a portico with a gable supported by columns . To the north and south of this side were corner pavilions, which on the ground floor had access to the women's prayer rooms and stairs to the rooms on the first floor.

The women's rooms each had three rectangular windows; above each wall there were two pairs of windows that let the light into the main hall.

The roof had up to four stories made up of concave, convex and straight slopes. These were separated from each other by cornices of different heights. There was a decorative frieze between the first convex roof and the second concave.

The corner pavilions had two-storey tent roofs, the roofs of the women's rooms leaned against the side walls.

The design of the entire building indicated that the main hall, vestibule, women's rooms and corner pavilions were built at the same time.

Because there are no drawings, photos or other records of the interior, nothing is known about the Bima and the Torah shrine .
