Synagogue (Pfungstadt)
The synagogue in Pfungstadt , a town in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district in Hesse , was built in the 1820s. The profaned synagogue is at Hillgasse 8.
history
In 1820 the Jewish community in Pfungstadt bought the property at today's Hillgasse 8 and converted the house into a synagogue. From 1836 to 1838 the synagogue building received an extension in which the stairwell was housed.
In 1922 there was another exterior and interior renovation of the synagogue, with the rededication on 25/26. August 1922 a memorial plaque for the Jewish soldiers from Pfungstadt who died in World War I was installed.
time of the nationalsocialism
During the November pogrom in 1938 , the interior of the synagogue was destroyed by the National Socialists. Then the building was bought by the agricultural cooperative and used as a warehouse.
Todays use
After 1945 the synagogue building went into private ownership and was converted into a residential and warehouse. In 1992 the city took over the former synagogue and renovated the building. Parts of the interior were still preserved and could be reconstructed, especially the ceiling painted with blue paint, decorated with gold stars and framed by an ornamented frieze.
In May 2001, the former synagogue cultural center opened as a meeting place and memorial for Jewish culture in the region.
