Memorial to the victims of the Shoah

The synagogue in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe , the district town of the Hochtaunuskreis in Hesse , was built in 1866 and destroyed in 1938.

history

Since 1731/32 there was a synagogue opposite Wallstrasse , which was used until the mid-1860s. In 1866 the Jewish community inaugurated a new synagogue building on Elisabethenstrasse. The synagogue with towers ending in onion domes was built according to the plans of the city building councilor Christian Holler . In 1904 it was rebuilt. The large prayer room had more than 400 places. Behind the synagogue building was the Jewish community building, where services were held on weekdays . The casino , the state treasury, the city of Bad Homburg, spa guests and Landgrave Ferdinand von Hessen-Homburg also contributed to the financing of the synagogue .

The synagogue was set on fire by SA men during the November pogroms in 1938 and burned down completely. The ruins of the synagogue building were blown up in the spring of 1939 by a Wehrmacht unit.

A memorial in the immediate vicinity of the synagogue site, inaugurated in November 1988, is dedicated to the murdered Jewish residents. The red sandstone memorial designed by the sculptor Hendrikus Godding replicates the shape of the three facade windows of the former synagogue. The names of the 81 Homburg Jews who were victims of the Shoah can be read on bronze plates .
