The synagogue in Bensheim , a town in the Bergstrasse district in Hesse , was built in 1891/92. The synagogue was located at Schönberger Strasse 14, today's Nibelungenstrasse.

history

During the November pogrom of 1938 , the synagogue was destroyed by members of the Bensheim SS early in the morning of November 10th. The doors to the synagogue were smashed and then the furniture was set on fire. The fire ruins were removed a little later.

Commemoration

Since 1971 a memorial plaque has been commemorating the destruction at the former synagogue site . In 1995 a new memorial was created. The memorial was redesigned again in 2000.
