The synagogue in Berne , a community in the Wesermarsch district in Lower Saxony , was built in 1839/49. The synagogue was at Lange Strasse 31.

history

In August 1840 the synagogue was inaugurated by the Oldenburg regional rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch . The Jewish community had received a grant from the Oldenburg state for the construction .

In 1938, the last head of the dissolving Jewish community sold the synagogue, as services had not taken place here for several years. With the proceeds, some Bernese Jews were able to finance their emigration to South Africa.

The synagogue building was spared during the November pogroms in 1938 . However, the interior furnishings were smashed and burned by members of the SA .

The synagogue building that has been preserved has been heavily modified during renovations.
