The Braunschweiger Synagogue at Braunschweiger Steinstraße 4 was inaugurated on December 6, 2006. It is the successor to the " New Synagogue " in Alte Kniehauerstraße 1 from 1873, which was destroyed by the National Socialists in 1938 and demolished in 1940 .

history

Previous buildings

The first two synagogues in Braunschweig were built in the courtyards of the Kohlmarkt . In 1873 the New Synagogue was built according to the plans of the architect Constantin Uhde , which was initially badly damaged by the National Socialists during the November pogroms from November 9th to 10th, 1938 and finally demolished in 1940 due to alleged dilapidation. A raised bunker was immediately built at its location , which is still there today, because it could not be blown up after the war due to the narrow buildings and is now used as a civil protection bunker for disasters. The bunker is directly adjacent to the Jewish community center.

New building from 2006

Due to the increased number of members of the Jewish community in Braunschweig, which meant that the synagogue room in the community hall that had been used up until then was no longer sufficient, it was decided to build a new synagogue in the inner courtyard of the community hall in Steinstrasse, directly adjacent to this and the bunker. In January 2006 Jürgen Justus Becker conceived and realized the campaign “1938 Building Blocks for the Synagogue” on a voluntary basis, whereby the number 1938 is intended to remind of the November pogroms of 1938 and their consequences. 1938 Citizens, companies and institutions in the Braunschweig region were asked to contribute 100 euros each to finance the new building. It took almost three years to achieve the goal. The foundation stone was laid on April 26th and the inauguration ceremony for the new building took place on December 6th, 2006.

architecture

The architect Dr. The new synagogue designed by Klaus A. Zugermeier and completed in 2006 used the existing walls of the neighboring buildings (historical sandstone wall of a fire section or wall of a bunker built on the foundations of the destroyed synagogue) as side walls. The new building offers space for approx. 200 people. On the ceiling, supported by seven columns, there is a ceiling exposure in the form of the Star of David . The line of sight of the building is oriented towards the Temple Mount in Jerusalem . The construction costs of around 600,000 euros were raised by the city of Braunschweig, various foundations and private individuals.
