history

The railway lines that opened from Prague and Dresden in 1851 prompted an increasing number of Jewish merchants and entrepreneurs to settle in Dečín, where Jewish residents have been mentioned since the 16th century.

The service has been held in a private house since 1874. A Jewish community was founded on July 30, 1887; with 162 parishioners. Siegmund Brauner and Karl Heller from Děčín as well as Gottfried Pick and Moritz Frankl from Weiher were among the founders of the community. The community leader was the factory owner Adolf Pächter, who made a garden pavilion available as a sukkah and a temporary synagogue on the site of his button factory . Later the Thunsche Zeughaus (today: archive building) and later the Volkshalle (today: House of Children and Youth) on Teplitzer Straße served as a synagogue. In 1888 the Chewra Kadischa was founded , a burial brotherhood , with Gottfried Pick as chairman.

In Bodenbach (Podmokly), the first Jewish religion teacher, Adolf Lederer, began teaching in 1855. Until his transfer to Chlumec he taught in Děčín, Jílové , Benešov , Verneřice and in Česká Kamenice . Rabbis in Děčín were Max Freund, J. Krengler and Oskar Karpelis. In 1915, factory owner Adolf Pächter died and his son Alfred Pächter succeeded him in the office of mayor. Alois Zirkel, a businessman from Děčín, later became the head of the community. The last church leader before the Shoah was Jacob Lemberg. During the November pogroms , the synagogue was devastated on the night of November 9-10, 1938.

In 1993 the community was re-established. Vilém Markovič was elected mayor, who was replaced in 1997 by Vladimír Poskočil.

In 1996 the synagogue was returned to the Israelite religious community. It is also used as an exhibition and concert hall.
