The synagogue in Diez , a town in the Rhein-Lahn district in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in 1862/63. The synagogue was at Kanalstrasse 9 across from the lower Aarbrücke .

history

The synagogue was built according to plans by the ducal-Nassau senior building councilor Carl Boos . It was inaugurated on November 13, 1863 by district rabbi Benjamin Höchstätter from Ems .

The interior was destroyed during the November pogrom in 1938 . A fire was set in the synagogue and an attempt was made to blow it up, with only minor damage due to the massive walls.

The synagogue building then became the property of the National Socialist Aviation Corps and was used as a workshop for the construction and maintenance of gliders.

After the end of the war, the building was confiscated and sold to a private company as part of the restitution process, which had it demolished in 1951.

Commemoration

In 1986 a notice board was put up on the synagogue site. This shows an image of the seven-armed candlestick ( menorah ) and the inscription reads: "Jewish Synagogue - 1863–1951".
