The synagogue in Kamianets-Podilskyj , a town in the Ukrainian Oblast of Khmelnytskyi , was probably built in the second half of the 19th century. Today there is a restaurant in the building. It is located on a steep bank of the Smotrych River . Next to it is the Honcharsko tower of the former city fortifications.

history

A first Jewish community is mentioned at the beginning of the 16th century. The synagogue (also known as the Schneider Synagogue ) was built between 1850 and 1899 (but the 18th century is also mentioned elsewhere).

Over the years it has been partially changed through renovation work and an annex was built on the southern side.

After the Second World War and the murder of the Jews , a restaurant was set up in the building.

architecture

The monumental building of the synagogue has the character of a fortress. It is based on a rectangular floor plan along the north-south axis. Later, a two-story building was built adjacent to the south facade, which functionally belongs to the synagogue. In terms of style, elements of the baroque and classicism were used.

The dimensions of the main building are 23.55 × 13.40 m; the total length is 30.65 m.

Due to the location on the slope to the river, the west facade is two-story, while the east facade is four-story.

The main entrance is on the west facade, two further entrances are in the north and south.

The east side has four floors with seven windows each; the west side has two floors with seven windows each. This is structured by pilasters between the windows.

The walls on the east side are 1.60 m thick on the first floor and taper towards the top to 0.80 m.

As can be seen in older pictures, the building originally had a hipped roof ; later this was replaced by a flat roof and surrounded by an attic .

A niche can still be seen at the original location of the Torah shrine on the east wall.

The bima is no longer there.
