Synagogue (Neckarsteinach)
The synagogue in Neckarsteinach , a town in the Bergstrasse district of Hesse , was built in 1888/89. The profaned synagogue is at 9 Hirschgasse.
History and description
In the 1800s, the Neckarsteinach Jewish community bought a house on the road to Hirschhorn and set up a prayer room and a teacher's apartment in it. In 1886 the old synagogue had to be demolished because it was in disrepair .
The new synagogue was built on the site of the old one. The foundation walls and the remaining remains of the old synagogue were partly taken over.
The two-storey solid building was clad with red sandstone . The window openings in the shape of a horseshoe arch and the cornices are made of light sandstone.
time of the nationalsocialism
During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was desecrated and devastated by National Socialists from Neckarsteinach and Ziegelhausen : On the evening of November 10, 1938, the men smashed the furniture with hatchets and axes.
The synagogue building was temporarily used as a prisoner of war camp during World War II and after 1945 it was converted into a residential building.
