The synagogue in Rüsselsheim in the 1920s

The synagogue in Rüsselsheim am Main , a town in the Groß-Gerau district in Hesse , was built in 1844/45. The profaned synagogue is at Mainzer Straße 19.

history

The building was renovated around 1895. A fire broke out in 1913, but it did not cause too much damage. In 1928/29 the synagogue was renovated again with the help of the Opel family .

The synagogue is a two-story solid building made of quarry stone with a gable roof . On the first floor there was a classroom on the left, where services were held on weekdays and in winter, as this room could be heated.

A mikveh (ritual bath) was probably housed in a separate building in the garden.

time of the nationalsocialism

During the November pogrom in 1938 , SA men broke open the synagogue's doors and destroyed the interior. The building itself was preserved as a non-Jewish family lived in the apartment above the former classroom. On November 21, 1938, the synagogue building became privately owned by purchase agreement.

After 1945

After 1945, after the restitution proceedings had been clarified, the building was sold to a cattle dealer and later to a lawyer. He set up an apartment and offices in the synagogue building, with the facade being heavily modified by renovations.

In November 2005 the building became the property of the non-profit housing association on behalf of the city council. Since 2007 there have been commemorative events, celebrations of Jewish holidays, etc. a. m. in the building.

In 2016, the Old Synagogue Foundation carried out extensive renovation work on the synagogue building in coordination with the State Monuments Office. In the areas in which there were arched windows before the conversion to the residential building, their reliefs were incorporated into the plaster.

In May 2017 a plaque with information about the history of the synagogue building was put up. The excavation of the mikvah behind the synagogue is planned.
