The synagogue in Subotica , the second largest city in Vojvodina and fifth largest city in the Republic of Serbia , was built from 1901 to 1903. The secular synagogue in Art Nouveau style has been a protected cultural monument since 1974 .

history

The synagogue was built according to plans by the Budapest architects Marcell Komor and Dezső Jakab on the site of a smaller previous building.

In the 1970s the structure was in such poor condition that the main dome threatened to collapse. Since the small Jewish community could not raise the money for the repairs, they assigned the construction of the city. The restoration work did not progress for a long time. It became even more difficult when the multi-ethnic state of Yugoslavia disintegrated in the early 1990s and a trade embargo was imposed on Serbia. In 1996 the World Monuments Watch organization put the building on the List of Most Endangered Monuments of the 100 most endangered cultural monuments worldwide and contributed money for a new roof through its foundation. Donations from other organizations were then also received. It was important to include it in a program for the renovation of synagogues decided by the Hungarian government in 2014 . In March 2018, the restored synagogue was reopened by Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Serbia's President Aleksandar Vučić .

architecture

The structure has five domes . The main dome over the central part, which is supported by eight iron columns, characterizes the cityscape. Three portals lead into a vestibule, from which the women's gallery can be reached via a staircase .
