The synagogue in Frankenthal (Pfalz) , a city in the northeast of Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in 1884/85. The synagogue was at 12 Glockengasse.

history

In 1791 the first synagogue was built on Hessengasse (today Glockengasse). After the number of parishioners had grown rapidly in the course of the 19th century, this synagogue became too small. Around 1880 it was decided to build a new synagogue and on February 13, 1884 the foundation stone was laid on the site of the old synagogue. On August 28, 1885, district rabbi Adolf Salvendi (1837–1914) inaugurated the new synagogue.

time of the nationalsocialism

In the early morning of November 10, 1938 , the synagogue was broken into by the National Socialists . A fire was started in the building, which destroyed the interior and the windows. The Gestapo confiscated the rituals and the community files.

In January 1940 the synagogue building became the property of the city of Frankenthal. During an air raid, the synagogue building was badly hit by bombs, so that only the outer walls remained. The ruin was demolished in the early 1950s. A cinema was built on the property and opened on December 25, 1953.

Commemoration

In 1960 Schustergasse was renamed Synagogengasse in memory of the former synagogue . In 1977 a memorial stone was erected and in 1988 a memorial with an information board was created.
