Lichtenfels synagogue (Upper Franconia)
The synagogue in Lichtenfels , the district town of the Lichtenfels district in the Bavarian administrative district of Upper Franconia , was built in 1797. The profaned synagogue at Judengasse 12 is a protected architectural monument .
history
In 1757, the Lichtenfels Jewish community received permission to build a synagogue that was not allowed to be on a public road. The city made a plot of land available for the construction. The single-storey plastered building with a mansard roof was renovated in 1867.
During the November pogrom in 1938 , SA men broke into the synagogue and destroyed the interior and rituals. The building came into the possession of the city in December 1938 and was used as a scrap iron store and on market days as a pigsty. After 1945 the building came into private ownership and was first used as a prayer room in a free church and later as a warehouse again.
In June 2010 the local council decided to renovate the former synagogue. The restoration was completed in October 2011 and since then the former synagogue has served as a cultural and meeting place.
