Former synagogue in Rimbach, today the Catholic Church of St. Elisabeth

The synagogue in Rimbach , a community in the Hessian district of Bergstrasse , was built from 1835 to 1840. The secular synagogue and today's Catholic Church of St. Elisabeth stands at the intersection between Hauptstrasse and Heinzenwiesenweg.

History and description

By 1830 the old synagogue had become too small, so that the Jewish community in Rimbach was planning a new building. She acquired one of the courtyard houses and began converting it into a synagogue around 1835, which was inaugurated in 1840.

The hall building with a gable roof had a floor plan of 17 × 10.5 meters. The access was in Heinzenwiesenweg. A staircase led from the synagogue vestibule to the women's gallery . There were 120 seats for men in the prayer room and 84 seats for women in the gallery.

time of the nationalsocialism

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was desecrated and the inside was completely devastated. The Jewish community was forced to sell the synagogue building at a low price to the local community, which repurposed the synagogue building as a fire-fighting equipment house.

After the restitution proceedings had been clarified, the synagogue building came into the possession of the Catholic parish in 1951, which converted it into a Catholic church in 1952/53, thereby completely changing it.

Commemoration

A memorial plaque was placed next to the entrance to today's church.
