In 1966, Breda delivered the first ten railcars of the M2.200 series, a further development of the proven M2.120 series. Another nine units were ordered in January 1972, and an order for ten more vehicles followed a few months later. The last four railcars were built by Ferrosud in 1982 and put into service the following year. The railcars are powered by a twelve-cylinder Breda diesel engine mounted under the floor of the car, which delivers 371 kW. The engine is coupled to a torque converter and a Wilson planetary gear set. The same drive group was used on the FS TEE trains . The RA 1009-1021 sidecars that go with the railcars were built by Breda and Ferrosud between 1968 and 1973. They differ from the railcars with the vestibules instead of the driver's cabs.

With the division of the FCL, the railcars came to the Ferrovie Appulo Lucane (FAL) and the Ferrovie della Calabria (FC). They proved themselves on lines with little gradients. On the mountainous route from Cosenza to Catanzaro , the drive and braking systems were overwhelmed. In the second half of the 1990s, the old Breda engines were therefore replaced by new 397 kW MAN engines and supplemented with a Voith gearbox with retarder . The railcars converted in this way were given the addition MV .

In 2016, the M2.200 series was no longer in use at FAL, while one was in operation at FC and four were assigned to the reserve.
