Wallau synagogue (Hofheim am Taunus)
The synagogue in Wallau , a district of Hofheim am Taunus in the Main-Taunus district in southern Hesse , was built in 1884/85. The synagogue was at 4 Bachgasse.
history
Around 1850 the Jewish community of Wallau applied for a new synagogue to be built. The new building could only be completed in the 1880s. On 4th / 5th December 1885, the district rabbi Michael Silberstein from Wiesbaden inaugurated the community center with synagogue, Jewish school and teacher's apartment.
The buildings were renovated in 1920/21. At that time the synagogue had 40 male and 24 female places. When, after 1933, many of the Jewish community members moved away and worship could no longer be held, the building was sold to a non-Jewish family.
Nevertheless, during the November pogrom in 1938, SA men broke into the building and demolished the interior.
In 1967 the building complex was demolished because it was in disrepair and a single-family house was built on the site of the synagogue and the school building. A memorial plaque was placed on the garage of the house .
