Synod of Zaragoza

The (first) Synod of Saragossa was a church assembly that took place in October 380 in the Iberian Saragossa (then: Colonia Caesaraugusta).

history

The main topic was dealing with the Priscillianists, the followers of the Priscillians from Ávila , who represented an ascetic mysticism. Hydatius of Emeritia charged Priscillian with heresy , sorcery and Manichaeism . Priscillian had some followers in the Iberian clergy, so that the debate about his alleged misconduct turned out to be very controversial. Hydatius, supported by Bishop Ithacius of Ossonoba, nevertheless enforced an excommunication condemnation of Priscillian and the Spanish bishops Istantius and Salvianus as his followers as heretics in Canon 1 of the Synod , after the accused did not appear at the synod. The three subsequently turned to Emperor Gratian as a court of appeal, without achieving rehabilitation, and Priscillian's Liber ad Damasum episcopum , in which he justified himself to the Roman bishop Damasus I , had no effect. Priscillian was executed in Trier in 385.

Since Priscillian also had women among his followers who were actively involved in the preaching work, the Synod also made it clear, in accordance with the New Testament commandment that women should be silent in the church, that women should not give in to the desire “to teach or to serve learn". One of the liturgical resolutions of the Synod is that Christmas is to be celebrated in Spain on December 25th, and Canon 4 even recommended that the faithful go to church every day between December 17th and January 6th.
