Ferdinand Langenberg (born April 7, 1849 in Goch ; † February 17, 1931 ) was a German carver .

Life

Ferdinand Langenberg was born in Goch as the son of the copper beater Heinrich Langenberg and his wife Anna Margarathe. After his mother's death in 1859, he spent a lot of time with his grandfather Johannes Langenberg, a carpenter in Kalkar . In 1863 he began an apprenticeship as a carver in Boxmeer .

After training in 1867, he went on a hike to Aachen and Munich. In Aachen, he joined the workshop of the neo-Gothic sculptor Friedrich Wilhelm Mengelberg as a journeyman . In 1868 Langenberg became a member of the Aachen Bachelor Congregation, which was particularly dedicated to the veneration of Mary . In 1872 he went to Munich to study, where, in addition to his work, he took drawing courses at the holiday drawing school.

At the annual art exhibition in 1873, Langenberg was awarded a gold medal. He spent September in Rome. In 1890 Langenberg received the first major order for a high altar in Weeze , the conception of which was significantly influenced by the Frankfurt city pastor EFA Münzenberger . In 1892 Langenberg was entrusted with the restoration of the valuable late Gothic altar in St. Nicolai Kalkar for the first time and met with the state curator and important art historian Paul Clemen .

Accompanied by the Venlo chaplain Joseph Windhausen , Langenberg went on a study trip to several cities in northern Germany in 1898 to prepare for his work on the altar of the Martinikerk in Venlo . In 1900 the Landsberg workshop already employed 30 people. In 1902 Langenberg was awarded the Silver State Medal for the high altar at St. Godehard in Vorst at the Düsseldorf Art and Industry Exhibition .

Freed from church service, Joseph Windhausen became a permanent advisor to Langenberg and moved into his house in Gocher. Under the artistic direction of Joseph Windhausen, Langenberg's greatest work in neo-Romanesque style, the high altar of St. Apostles in Cologne, was completed in 1911 . After the death of his wife Henriette in 1925, Langenberg handed over the management of his workshop to his eldest son Josef Langenberg , who had attended the arts and crafts school in Munich.

After Windhausen's death (1931), Josef Langenberg closed the workshop in 1936 and part of the workshop equipment along with works of art and drawings by Ferdinand Langenberg can be viewed in the Gocher Museum.

The renovated Langenberghaus stands on Roggenstraße, a half-timbered house with carvings by the sculptor Ferdinand Langenberg (neo-Gothic). The artist lived and ran his workshop here. The roof of the house is carved by the artist.

The Gocher Museum keeps a considerable number of hand drawings, numerous workshop photos, sculptures and, above all, valuable altar models by the carver. In addition, there are numerous props from his workshop, personal diaries, sample books, accounting books about his employees and all kinds of tools.
