The Syntagma musicum is one of the musicological writings of the composer Michael Praetorius . It is one of the most important works in music theory literature. The three volumes contain extensive information on studying historical performance practice and historical musical instrument making .

Classification of musical instruments

The second volume, as a separate part, which was published under the title Theatrum Instrumentorum seu Sciagraphia (Wolfenbüttel 1620), contains images of contemporary musical instruments and a classification of musical instruments that are important sources for historical musical instrument making. In addition to the string and wind instruments known in Europe at the time, there is also the first image of an African Pluriarc .
