Sirtaki

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sirtaki ( Greek συρτάκι syrtaki , 'little Syrtos ') is a dance from the 1964 film Alexis Sorbas in the tradition of Greek folk dances . It is danced in a row, with the dancers placing their arms over the neighbors' shoulders. This distinguishes it from many traditional dances, which are usually danced in a circle with hands held.

origin

The sequence of steps of the sirtaki was choreographed for the first time in 1964 to the film music by Mikis Theodorakis for the film Alexis Sorbas based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis , allegedly to facilitate the performance of the lead actor Anthony Quinn, who was not very talented for Greek dances ; originally a five-bar pentosalis was planned for the final dance scene . Quinn himself later explained the invention of the dance steps with a foot injury. So it is an invented tradition , the choreography known today as sirtaki is by no means an ancient Greek folk good. Along with the film, the sirtaki became internationally known and for many non-Greeks it became the epitome of Greek dance.

The Sirtaki got its name from the folk dance Syrtos, actually sirtos choros (Greek: συρτóς χορóς), which means "the dragging dance", in contrast to the jumping dance, the pidiktos choros (Greek: πηδηκτóς χορóς). The choreography of the new dance is based on the Constantinopolitan Chasapiko ("dance of the butchers from Constantinople ") with initially slow steps and ends in the faster sequence of steps of the Chasaposervikos ( sérvikos "Serbian", a fast Chasapikos).

Surname

"Sirtaki" is the diminutive (diminutive) of Syrtos, the most traditional type of Greek folk dance. Almost every island (group) has its own Syrtos, e.g. B. the Syrtos Skiros , the Sirtos Silivrianos of Naxos or the Chaniotiko (Syrtos of Chania , Crete ). There are also dances on the mainland, such as the Syrtos of the Sarakatsans, which are nicknamed "Syrtos", but have nothing to do with the Syrtos in 2/4 time with the dance rhythm "long-short-short". The Syrtos is danced in an open circle and with an unlimited number of participants, Sirtaki (Syrtaki), the "little Syrtos", is usually only played by two or three on top of one another because of the possibility of freely combining his figures (in contrast to the fixed sequence of steps in traditional folk dances) People danced.

meaning

Mikis Theodorakis' combination of elements from regional Greek dances in a new dance has given it an outstanding meaning and is now regarded as a national cultural asset in Greece. He is also associated with Greece abroad.

The remix by ATHENA, released in 1994, was played in the German Ice Hockey League in connection with players of Greek descent who came to Germany after the Bosman judgment . After that, the version established itself as Opening Face Off Music.

Since 2018, Barilla has been using a version in its commercial with Davide Oldani and Roger Federer .
