System Architect is a software tool for the visualization and analysis of the corporate architecture and business processes of an organization. It is used to facilitate communication about internal processes and the IT architecture between those involved in the company and to create a decision-making basis for future changes through analysis and visualization of the relationships between technology, processes and the associated company goals and strategies. System Architect supports all those involved in this task of Enterprise Architecture Management . System Architect was developed by IBM and sold under the Rational Software brand . At the end of 2015, the software was acquired by the American company Unicom Systems and has officially ceased to belong to IBM since January 1, 2016.

The current version 11.4.4 was published on April 11, 2016. In addition to the rebranding, it contains a new help tool, a new licensing model based on new licensing technologies and other improvements that have arisen due to change requests.

history

The first version of System Architect was developed by Jan Popkin in the USA and published in 1988. The global success of the tool soon blew the small company's capabilities, and in 2005, Popkin Software was acquired by the Swedish company Telelogic . Telelogic, in turn, was bought by IBM in 2008 and System Architect was assigned to the IBM Rational Software brand . On December 31, 2015, the acquisition of the software by the Unicom Systems Inc. division of the Unicom Global Group was announced.

Enterprise architecture models

Traditionally, different types of modeling have emerged for the various levels of an enterprise architecture. Various modeling standards are combined in one tool in the System Architect. All information is stored in a central database, the so-called encyclopedia. The metamodel can be individually adapted to user requirements. The supported frameworks include:

  • Zachman Framework ,
  • The Open Group Architecture Framework ( TOGAF ),
  • Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF),
  • Ministry of Defense Architectural Framework (MODAF),
  • TM Forum NGOSS and others.

Visualization and analysis

Business and IT information can be visualized and merged with System Architect. Strategies, goals and organizations, company architecture and processes can be analyzed in blueprints. Applications, services and data, systems, networks and components can be graphically modeled and related to one another. This enables the impact of changes to be better assessed and the right decisions to be made for future investments.

System Architect user interfaces

There are various ways of using the tool for the different roles that work with the tool: via a native client, via a web client or using a publishing component.
