System gain is a term from video and communication technology . It describes the quality of a signal transmission , which in practice is always impaired by noise components (including image noise ). The numerical value of the system gain expresses the factor by which the signal-to-noise ratio is increased, i.e. improved, by a certain technical measure. The number obtained is the basis for the subsequent cost-benefit analysis .
