Szpital (German: "Das Krankenhaus" ) is one of the early, short documentary films by Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski from 1977 . He accompanies the everyday life of several doctors in a Polish hospital.

action

The film takes place in the trauma surgery department of the hospital on Barska Street in Warsaw . It shows the difficult and extreme conditions of doctors in ongoing operations at the time, during serious operations and their struggle with defective medical devices.

background

The film was shot with a bulky, heavy 35 mm camera, but otherwise entirely meets the requirements of French cinéma vérité . In his autobiography Kieslowski writes: “You can see doctors going from one building to another. We also had to move, of course, but it was impossible to move the camera more than three times in one night ”.

In 2006 the film was released on DVD as part of the Polish documentary series Polska Szkoła Dokumentu , along with other short films by the director.
