The Sóller Tunnel ( Tunel de Sóller ) is a road tunnel on the Balearic island of Mallorca in the mountains of Alfabia (Sierra de Alfàbia).

Architecture and history

The 3,023 meter long tunnel with a two-lane tube is part of the Ma-11 road, which connects the capital Palma with the port of Port de Sóller . Construction began on October 10, 1989 and should be completed within 30 months. The cost was estimated at 4.5 billion pesetas . However, there were significant delays and cost increases. The tunnel was cut through in February 1995. The tunnel was ultimately inaugurated in 1999. Since then, it has been possible to avoid the tedious drive over the 63 hairpin bends of the pass road leading over the Coll de Sóller .

The concession contract for the construction and maintenance was signed between the Balearic Government and Globalvia . The average traffic between the city of Sóller and the port was 7,752 vehicles per day (as of 2010). Initially, the Sóller tunnel was subject to a toll . However, on December 29, 2017, the toll requirement was lifted prematurely. The concession, which actually runs until 2022, was prematurely terminated by the public sector with a compensation payment. Legal proceedings were pending over the amount of the payment.

In January 2018, the island council removed a plaque commemorating the inauguration of the Sóller tunnel by former island president Jaume Matas , who was convicted of corruption .

Trivia

According to a study by the Spanish automobile club Real Automóvil Club de España (RACE), the tunnel was one of the 25 most dangerous tunnels in Europe in 2003.
